Uses for Salt

0 Homemade Remedy No Comments

Before we delve into the good uses for salt, remember that all the experts tell us to ……

because in large quantities it is bad for us.    Some salt is required to stay healthy, and these same experts reckon between 1,000 to 1,500mg is sufficient to accomplish all the vital functions that sodium performs in the body, namely:

  • help maintain normal fluid levels
  • help maintain healthy muscle
  • help maintain function and proper acidity of the blood

However,  salt or sodium, whatever you prefer to call it,  it has some really simple uses for common household problems, and also some natural home remedies for day to day non life threatening problems.

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon origanum

Mix well in a mortar and pestle and transfer to a salt cellar, add a few grains of rice to keep the mixture dry.

Household Uses for Salt

Sponges

Restore the original condition of your old sponges by soaking them in cold saltwater for an hour or so.

Laundry

Boil any yellowed laundry in a solution of salt, baking power and water, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Sour Milk

In warm weather, when milk tends to sour sooner, add a pinch of salt and it will keep longer.

Burnt Pots

Fill the burnt pot with a strong solution of salt dissolved  in water and allow to stand for a few hours.   The burnt bits will come off easily.

Artificial Flower Cleaner

Clean artificial flowers by shaking them in a large paper bag with half a cup of salt.

Oven Spills

Cover fresh oven spills with salt, allow to stand for 15 to 20 minutes and then wipe.    Follow the same procedure when you drop grease or raw egg on the floor.

Kill unwanted, unsightly weeds by spraying with salt water.

Red Wine Spill

One of the most famous uses for salt is this one, and  if you don’t know about it yet then this is what you do.

Sprinkle a generous portion of salt onto the spill and leave for a few minutes.   The salt will absorb most of the wine before you wash the stain.

Tea and Salt

Just a pinch of salt in a pot of tea will make it draw better and will also add a special taste to the tea.

Onion Odor

Can’t stand the pong of onions on your hands after cutting them for cooking?

Then wash your hands with salt water immediately after working with onions and the odor will go.

Home Remedies for Salt

And then we have some really simple uses for salt that we can use for small day to day issues that we might have with our bodies, check them out and try them out.

What Causes Gout

0 Homemade Remedy No Comments

What Causes Gout?

Ask most people “what causes gout?” and they will tell you that booze does.

WRONG, booze will aggravate the problem but it is not the cause of gout. An excess of uric acid in our bodies is the root of this problem.

The first things to blame here are the kidneys, if they are not doing their job properly by eliminating uric acid.

And then You Mr Gout Sufferer are the next to blame by taking in too many foods rich in purines

GOUT AND URIC ACID

  • We all have uric acid in our bodies which is excreted in the urine.
  • It should be noted that uric acid in itself is not a harmful substance.
  • It is in fact a powerful antioxidant which is considered almost as powerful as vitamin C. which protects cells from oxidative damage.
  • It is only when the levels become abnormally elevated that it becomes a problem.

Ouch!!

  • Elevated levels could be an indicator of a kidney malfunction and should be medically assessed.
  • It
has been found that people who have gout do not produce enough of the
digestive enzyme uricase, which is what oxidizes the relatively
insoluble uric acid into a highly soluble compound.

What Triggers Gout?

We have set out that gout is caused by a defect in the body’s ability to metabolize uric acid, but in answer to the question What Causes Gout, we need to know what triggers these agonizingly painful incidents.

  • Overindulgence in food
  • Excess Alcohol
  • Obesity
  • A family history of Gout

Gout and Arthritis

  • Gout is a type of Arthritis.
  • It has the reputation of been the most prevalent form of arthritis.
  • It is more prevalent in men, but women are starting to catch up as more and more women are now known to be suffering from gout.

Why does Gout prefer the Big Toe?

What causes gout is the first frequently asked question and the second is why the big toe?

It is not really known, but the theory is that because uric acid is more likely to crystallize at lower temperatures, this may just explain why roughly 90% of gout attacks affect cooler extremities like the big toe.

Gout and Purines

Purines are metabolized to uric acid in the body and eventually the uric acid forms needle-like crystals that behave like needles and start jabbing the joint leading to acute bouts of gout.

Foods to avoid include the following:

  • Cauliflower
  • Asparagus
  • Mushrooms
  • Offal
  • Game
  • Sardines
  • Shellfish
  • Anchovies
  • Poultry
  • Alcohol

Lastly what can I do?

You can start off by looking at some of our home remedies for gout as well as natural ways of helping prevent bouts of gout.

And as the last word, try munching on celery stalks or take 2 to 4 celery seed extract daily.

Celery not only helps maintain healthy blood pressure due to its good source of potassium, but it also helps the kidneys to function efficiently and thereby hasten the excretion of wastes.

And then it also contains a natural anti-inflammatory which can help to alleviate the painful symptoms of gout.

Uses for Vinegar

0 Homemade Remedy No Comments

Before we look at the many uses for vinegar lets start off by telling you that the name vinegar comes from the Latin vinum acer meaning sharp wine.

It is made up almost entirely of water, and although it may contain other related compounds, it is acetic acid, which is what gives vinegar its characteristically sour flavour.

So lets swing right in, and start on these uses for vinegar by giving you the some easy things to do with vinegar for simple household problems.

USES FOR VINEGAR – HOW TO REVIVE FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar for every 950ml of water in the vase.

Uses for Vinegar and how to clean mirrors and windows.

Get your mirrors and windows sparkling and clean by using a cloth soaked in vinegar and water.

Versatile Vinegar

Another one of our uses for vinegar which is how to clean automatic dish washing machines – simply.

If you are lucky enough to have an automatic dishwasher – then you must know that if you want to remove soap build-up and odors from your machine, place a cup of white vinegar in the empty machine and run it for one cycle.

Clean your automatic washing machine with Vinegar.

Same goes for your automatic washing machine.   Put half a cup of vinegar into the soap tray, fill the machine with water and do a full spin cycle.

You can also clean your Kettle with Vinegar.

Got lime deposits in your kettle?

One of the most well know uses for vinegar is to help get rid of this lime deposit.

Fill the kettle with equal parts of vinegar and water and bring to the boil.   Allow to stand overnight.

Use as a Hand Deodorant.

Remove the smell of onions or fish from your hands by rinsing them with vinegar.

Soften your old paint brushes.

Revive old paintbrushes in a distilled white vinegar and water solution, then wash in a heavy duty detergent.

Poach Eggs

To poach an egg without having the white spread out too far, add one tablespoon of vinegar to the water.

Rinse for your laundry.

To brighten white clothes soak them in 5 liters of warm water with one cup of white vinegar, follow up with a clear water rinse.

The best way to wash wooden floors.

Mix a  half cup of vinegar into a liter of warm water and wash flooring with the liquid.   Do not use a mop, use a cloth and which has been immersed in the liquid and then squeezed out.

Remove Perspiration Stains.

Saturate perspiration stains with vinegar before laundering.

Home Remedies using Vinegar

Now we will go to some of those minor, but niggling afflictions that come to taunt our bodies from time to time and we will give you some really useful but simple uses for vinegar to help treat them.

ATHLETES FOOT

Soak your feet in a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts warm water for 15 minutes.

White vinegar is believed to effectively reduce the growth of fungus in athletes foot, because of its anti-microbial properties and it will also relieve the itching associated with athletes foot.

BODY ODOR

Because vinegar neutralizes alkalinity, it will make your skin an inhospitable place for bacteria to live and breed, so simply wipe your underarms with a cloth soaked in vinegar and it WILL help prevent body odor.

CORNS

My mother always suffered with corns, and she used to soak a piece of white bread in a quarter cup of vinegar.  She then used to apply this poultice to the corns and cover with a bandage and gauze for the night.

The following morning, after bathing she would find that the vinegar would have dissolved the thick skin and she just used to peel the corn off, and that I remember her doing this as if it was yesterday.

BURSITIS

Bursitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs in the joints, which can be extremely painful.   Try drinking a mixture of 2 tablespoons of vinegar (ugh) and 2 tablespoons of honey.

Vinegar has been known for centuries as a natural anti-inflammatory and combined with the natural anti-biotic qualities of honey, it should do the trick?

SPRAINED JOINTS

If ice does not relieve the pain and swelling of a sprained joint, then try hot vinegar compresses, remembering that vinegar has been used for thousands of years as one of the oldest natural folk home remedies around.

SWIMMERS EAR

There have been scientific investigations which have shown that vinegar has anti-microbial properties which means it is good for killing germs, and will help with ear infections as well as help dry the ear out.

NAIL FUNGUS

Suffering from an unsightly nail fungus?  Then try soaking your nails in white vinegar, it helps to inhibit the growth of fungi due to its anti- microbial properties.

SUNBURN

As long as there are no blisters, apply distilled cold vinegar compresses to the sunburned area.   Vinegar has antiseptic properties and this will help to relieve discomfort and prevent blisters.

Nausea Home Remedies

0 Homemade Remedy No Comments

Too many sweeties on Haloween?

Nausea Home Remedies will help you with that horrible sick feeling that creeps up on you and builds up into a full  blown bout of nausea. UGH!

You feel as “sick as a dog”, you have to lie down, your heart beat is raised and you break out in a sweat, the sight or smell of food makes the feeling even worse

You must have all experienced this feeling at some stage in your life, and you know how awful it is, especially when it just hangs around and no vomiting occurs.

Just before we get onto these simple nausea home remedies, let’s have a look at the causes of this condition.

Causes of Nausea

Danger Foods

This is a summarized list of the danger foods which, when consumed, and especially in large quantities, can lead to nausea.

  • Fatty Foods
  • Fried Foods
  • Spicy Foods
  • Creamy rich foods
  • Processed Meats

Steer as far away as possible from these foods if you are prone to nausea from eating.

Nausea Home Remedies and Ginger

It is  the root of the ginger plant that has the healing powers.

Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols (helps reduce gastric contraction) and it is these two substances that give ginger it’s tummy calming powers.

Unlike drugs, ginger has no side effects because it does’nt work through the nervous system.

For nausea home remedies, you can crush the ginger and eat it neat, you can make an infusion of ginger, you can use as a tincture but which ever way you choose to take this herb for nausea, be sure it is the real thing and not just an item using ginger flavouring.

DID YOU KNOW?

Once upon a time, long long ago, a fad was started by Inn Keepers in England.

They began serving their ales with  grated ginger  sprinkled on the top of the ales they were pouring for their patrons…… hence the name Ginger Ale.

Another helpful Remedy using Bicarb

Simply dissolve 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water and drink.

Nausea is caused by our bodies need for sodium bicarbonate which helps moderate excess dietary or metabolic acid.

This remedy comes from a very old South African book of remedies, and is a remedy which has been passed down through the centuries.

It was probably around long before science discovered that our bodies required sodium bicarbonate to prevent nausea.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint Tea is a digestive aid which can ease nausea and vomiting and will help with the bad taste left in your mouth after a bout of vomiting.

Peppermint seems to stop muscle spasms in the digestive tract, including those involved in vomiting.

The tannins in the mint help reduce stomach inflammation.

Remember to always check with your Doctor  before you start self-medicating especially if you are pregnant or nursing.

Raw Onion

As a child, I was due to write an important exam the next morning and started throwing up at about midnite.

My father came in after the second bout, held my head and gave me some raw onion to eat… ugh… but it worked I was able to get up the next morning, I wrote my exam and just in case you are interested,  I passed.

There is no scientific proof substantiating this, but it worked for me.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains the antiemetic (a substance which is effective against nausea and vomiting) camphor.

It also contains chemicals called catechins which is also believed to help with nausea.

Rosemary and Sage

Two more very popular culinary herbs that are rich sources of the antiemetic (see healing plants) camphor.

One of the most effective ways of ending nausea is to allow yourself to vomit, or force yourself to vomit by sticking your finger down your throat.

It can still carry on a bit depending on the reason for the nausea, but mostly that will be the end of it.

St John’s Wort is used for relieving hangovers, sinus congestion and chronic coughing as well as been a natural anti-depressant and a natural help for depression.

It contains hyperforin and hypercin which it is believed will release neurotransmitters in the brain, one of them been serotonin, which as explained below is the one closely linked to moods.

Sage is useful for many ailments such as diarrhea, heartburn, flatulence, hot flashes and asthma, but it is also an excellent and very light natural anti-depressant.

Add a few leaves daily to your salads, soups or whatever you are eating.

Licorice has anti-spasmodic properties, is used to treat low blood pressure, and is most useful as an expectorant in treating bronchial disorders.

On the depression side, there is a school of thought that believes the physical cause of depression lies in the liver, so take yourself off to the health shop and get some licorice tea because research has shown that licorice not only helps the liver neutralize toxins it also contains a neurotransmitter called serotonin which is one of the neurotransmitters closely linked to moods.

Low levels of serotonin can lead to depression, anxiety and sleep disorders.

When the bran produces serotonin, tension is eased.

Do not  use licorice if you have high blood pressure, liver, kidney or heart disease and if you are pregnant or nursing.

Ginger is used for easing colds and flu as well as the symptoms of bronchitis, and also for headaches.

It contains caffeic acid, melatonin and quercetin which enhance the mood.

Chamomile can be used to help ease sore throats, colic and nausea and is good for insomnia.

It will also help to lift the spirits because of the two antidepressant compounds it contains i.e. caffeic acid and quercetin.

Oregano will help relieve aching muscles, bruising, tonsillitis and anxiety, and because it also contains caffeic acid and quercetin it may also help with depression.
