Before we tackle the reason for this page with our cough home remedies, let’s take a moment and see what herbs can be used to help relieve irritating coughs.

Slippery Elm

  • This herb is recognized by the FDA as a safe and effective medicinal option for sore throats and respiratory symptoms such as coughs.
  • Slippery Elm contains mucilage, (see herbal dictionary) which suppresses coughing and soothes the throat.
  • Get the Slippery Elm from your local health shop and make a tea from the dried herb.

Ginger

  • Ginger is an excellent expectorant  which means it is an agent that dissolves thick mucus and is used to help respiratory difficulties.
  • Ginger is also anti-bacterial which in turn means that it is a compound or substance that kills or slows down the growth of bacteria.
  • Thinly slice a piece of ginger root, usually about 5 slices, allow to steep in a cup of boiling water for about 5 minutes, sweeten with honey and sip.   You can leave the root in the cup and chew on a little while drinking the tea.

Flaxseed

  • Flax seed is both  demulcent and expectorant.   Expectorant,  means that it helps increase the flow of mucus which in turn helps to expel mucus from the lungs.
     
  • Demulcent helps to soothe irritated tissue and moisten mucus membranes.
  • Get some Flax seed from your local health shop and make a tea from 2 tablespoons of the seed in a cup of boiling water, once again add honey to sweeten and also some fresh lemon juice.

Cough Home Remedies – Honey

Mix one tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey in a small glass of warm water, and drink regularly.

You can also trickle a teaspoon of honey down your throat at bedtime.

Honey encourages the production of saliva, which helps to soothe dry irritated throats.   It also contain a substance called propolis which is one of nature’s natural antibiotics.

Want to flush out your nasal passages (good idea if you have a niggling cough) then use a neti pot (available from your health shop) to make things easier.

Mix a cup of warm water with a heaped teaspoon of salt. Tilt your head and pour some of the mixture into the raised nostril.  Repeat from the other side.

Cough Home Remedies – Lemon Juice

Boil quartered and peeled oranges and lemons in a little water and then add extra lemon juice and honey to taste.   Take at bedtime.

Lemon juice is loaded with Vitamin C which has been known for year to work wonders for colds and coughs.

Cough Syrup from Marshmallow Roots

2 Teaspoons of chopped dried marshmallow root

2 cups of water

2 cups of sugar

1/4 cup orange juice

Stir the marshmallow root and water and boil over a moderate heat.  Reduce heat and allow to simmer for 20 minutes, slowly stir in the sugar, so that a thick syrup forms (see preparing herbs)  and then simmer until the  sugar grains have dissolved completely.   Allow to cool and then gradually add the orange juice.

Marshmallow roots aid the body in expelling mucus and is therefore very useful for soothing irritating coughs.

Elderberry Syrup for Coughs

4 cups of berries (remove all the stalks)

2 cups raw honey

Boil ingredients together and then simmer in a double boiler for 2 hours with the lid on. (use 2 tablespoons of water to start the syrup)

Pour into sterilized jars, seal and refrigerate and take one teaspoon several times per day.

Elderberries are loaded with vitamin C and they also have calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.

If you’ve been in or around the woods at all, you’ve probably heard the saying “leaves of three, let it be.” Sounds simple enough, right? Unfortunately, even for those allergic to poison ivy, it can be a bit more difficult than that to avoid breaking out in an unbearably itchy rash.

Being on the lookout for “leaves of three” is a great starting point, but what many of us aren’t taught is that poison ivy, oak and sumac all contain the same oil—urushiol—which, for some, can cause an allergic reaction when it binds to the skin and that fact can increase the odds of coming into contact with something bothersome.

Where to Find Poison Ivy and Oak

Poison ivy is the most prevalent variety of these plants and can be found throughout most of the United States, excluding California and Hawaii. Poison oak is found throughout California, the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and East coast. Poison sumac also produces urushiol and is found in super-moist, swampy areas along the East, Gulf and Upper Peninsula coasts.

If you know you’ve come in contact with these plants, wash the affected area thoroughly with warm, soapy water as soon as possible to help avoid the resulting rash. Wash all clothing, tools or other personal items that could have come in contact as well, considering that the oil resin can remain active for years, causing future rashes to occur unbeknownst to you. And, in the event that you’ve already developed a rash, you can rest easy knowing there are natural ways to alleviate itching, redness and discomfort.

Even in the case of urushiol-induced rashes, Fuller is right. Nature is a powerful resource for healing, and provides us with the perfect antidote to soothe irritated skin. Often referred to as “touch-me-not,” jewelweed is part of the impatiens family and enjoys the same habitats as poison ivy, oak and sumac. Odds are, if you’ve stumbled into a patch, you can readily find nature’s cure nearby!

Using Jewelweed for Poison Ivy Treatment

1. Locate orange-flowered jewelweed (Impatiens biflora) and harvest, making sure to keep stalks intact.
2. If outdoors, break the stalk and rub raw plant juices directly on exposed areas.
3. If treating at home, place stalks in a blender and blend thoroughly. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator through spring and summer. You can also boil crushed stalks to create an extract that can be frozen for up to 1 year.

Easy-to-Find Alternatives to Raw Jewelweed

If you aren’t in an area with abundant jewelweed habitats or can’t find any, French green clay is an excellent alternative. It works somewhat like Calamine lotion—but better, in my experience. Measure clay into a small, lidded jar, add water and stir to create a paste thick enough that it won’t drip or slip when applied. Apply clay to rash, let dry and cover with clothing. Seal your container to keep this remedy hydrated and ready for your next application.

Most health food stores also offer jewelweed soap and comfrey salves. Use the soap in the shower to help dry out the rash. Once the rash begins to dry out and heal, apply a soothing comfrey salve (try our DIY recipe if you can’t find one locally) to reduce redness, itching and speed-up healing time. Bonus: Keep your comfrey salve handy for minor scrapes, pain relief and bug bites.

Yoghurt is an amazing foodstuff because it keeps the bad bacteria dwelling in our bodies at bay, by fighting bacteria with bacteria and the winner is…… Yoghurt.

Bacteria that live in the back of the throat is a common cause of bad stinky breath, yoghurt will help eliminate this bacteria and allow you to come back smelling like rose breath.

Sage Gargle

Pour boiling water into a tea cup and add a handful of sage leaves, allow to cool, drain and use the liquid as a gargle.

Sage has three different phytochemicals that fight bad breath, one of them been menthol which is well known as a breath freshener.

An Apple a day keeps bad breath away.

Causes of Bladder Infections

  • In women, bacteria been transferred from the bottom (the anus) to the vagina and urethra and then to the bladder can cause a bladder infection, this is because of the closeness of the bottom (the anus) to the vagina and the urethra.
  • In men bacteria can reach the bladder by ascending through the urethra or by an infected prostate gland.

The Risk of Bladder infections can be Increased by:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Use of a diaphragm
  • Diabetes

Symptoms of a Bladder Infection

  • A strong urge to have a “wee”. (see also incontinence).
  • Painful sensation whilst trying to relieve yourself.
  • Burning sensation whilst urinating.
  • A need to “go” frequently with not too much success.
  • Cloudy urine.
  • Strong or smelly urine.
  • Blood in the urine.

If you are displaying any of these symptoms then it is very important that you take yourself off to your doctor for a check-up.

It may not be serious, but the sooner you have it checked out the less chance the infection has of turning into something serious and spreading to your kidneys.

p.s  if your urine is very yellow it is probably from a vitamin supplement that you are taking.

2 cups of water

Method

Mix all ingredients together and allow to simmer until sugar and honey are dissolved, stirring frequently.

Add a squeeze of lemon juice, strain and pour into a glass bottle with a lid.

Pour a 1/4 of a glass and top up with iced water.   Not only delicious to drink but is also believed to help soothe the symptoms of a bladder infection.

Why you ask?  Well it is believed that cranberry juice prevents E.coli from attaching to the walls of the bladder, and it is also believed that it not only helps for the symptoms but it also helps prevent bladder infections.

Use an agent like citro-soda dissolved in water to help alkalinise the urine.

Bladder Infection Home Remedy

Apple Cider Vinegar

Ingredients

2 tsp apple cider vinegar

1 glass of water

Method

Mix the above two ingredients and drink 2 to 3 glasses per day.

Apple cider vinegar not only gives you all the goodness of apples but it also makes your body’s internal pH more alkaline, which discourages the growth of bacteria.  It also helps detox the body and cleanses the kidneys.

Herbs for Bladder Infections

Parsley

  • Celery – Celery seed extracts are analgesic, anti-inflammatory and have diuretic properties, which makes it a natural choice as a bladder infection home remedy. Celery also helps for nervous conditions and is effective against flatulence.
  • Buchu – You can get capsules at your local heal shop or even tea bags, which will help relieve the burning sensation during urination related to a bladder infection.
  • Parsley – which is also a diuretic (which means ” it is a substance that causes more urine to be secreted”.)  It helps to cleanse the kidneys and bladder and the whole urinary system.  It is also an effective arthritis and gout treatment.
  • Fennel – once again this is a diuretic, and as a bonus is good for helping with heartburn and nausea.
  • Flaxseed – has been used through the ages for treating bladder infections, and is also known to be good for back aches and spasms.
  • Watercress – a safe diuretic and can help break up kidney stones.

  • Ladies, after been to the Loo wipe yourself from front to back.
  • Always have a wee as soon as possible when the urge arises.
  • Empty your bladder as soon as possible after having sex.
  • Drink lots of fluid.
